Tea has long been used as an aid for weight loss. Drinking a cup of tea with each meal is a protocol for it to be successfully used as a metabolic stimulant. The caffeine in tea increases body function to help burn more calories and the polyphenols also found in it seem to aid in the digestion of fat.
Pu-erh and Oolong teas have received the most attention regarding weight loss, while some believe that all types of Chinese tea can help you lose weight because they offer a low-calorie alternative to commercial beverages.
Green Tea – Made from unfermented leaves and is pale in color and slightly bitter in flavor, green tea is produced mainly in China and Japan. Although it does not raise the metabolic rate enough to produce immediate weight loss.
A green tea extract containing polyphenols and caffeine has been shown to induce the production of heat in your body and stimulate fat oxidation, boosting your metabolic rate to 4% without increasing your heart rate. Although the weight loss effect of green tea has not been proven completely, there are some studies that have come back with promising results.
Pouchong Tea – Also known as light oolong tea, pouchong is lightly fermented, with floral notes, and usually not roasted. Its type is somewhere between green tea and what is usually considered oolong tea, though it is often classified with the latter due to its lack of the sharper green tea flavors.
Together with green tea, oolong tea, and black tea, pouchong tea has been shown to have antioxidant activity that protects against mutagens, a physical or chemical agent that changes your DNA and increases the frequency of mutations above the natural background level.
Tea pigments are important antioxidants and one study found pouchong tea to have over three times the amount of these compounds relative to black tea, though it was found to have less than green or oolong teas. Like the green tea, there is no study that proves pouchong can be a weight loss tea that works.
White Tea – White tea is a lightly oxidized tea grown and harvested almost exclusively in China, primarily in the Fujian province. Like black and green teas, white tea is also derived from the Chinese Camellia sinensis plant, which is why it shares many of the same chemical properties and health effects of the other teas. However, this tea hasn’t been studied for any weight loss properties.
Herbal Tea – Also known as tisane, or ptisan, it is a plant infusion and usually not made from the leaves of Camellia sinensis. Among the many varieties of herbal tea, fennel, the seeds and leaves of which are used as culinary herbs, has been considered a traditional weight-loss herb, though there are no studies to prove this claim.
